Medium-duty towing FAQs
There’s the manufacturer’s rated towing capacity, which you’ll find in your vehicle’s manual, and the maximum towing capacity, which is a closer estimate of what your truck can actually tow (and what you’re looking for).
The max tow capacity depends on a few things: your truck’s configuration, how much weight it already carries, and how the load’s weight is distributed.
To determine towing capacity:
- Calculate the combined weight of your vehicle and the trailer when loaded as the manufacturer instructed. This is called the GCWR (gross combined weight rating)
- Subtract the vehicle’s curb weight—your truck’s weight after it’s loaded with fuel (gas or diesel)— from the GCWR. The sum is your maximum towing capacity.
